Cada sinfonía trata un tema en particular: el cerebro, los átomos, el big bang, etc.

La orquesta científica permite descargar todos sus temas gratuitamente y se mantiene con donaciones (vía Paypal o Bitcoin).

With so much brainless music on the radio these days, it’s comforting to see projects like Symphony of Science. SoF is a musical project headed by compositor John Boswell aimed to deliver scientific knowledge through rhythm and image.

All songs are actually, remixes. Boswell takes parts of different shows and talks, and mixes them with different effects and the help of Auto-tune to make voices follow the tune. Each symphony deals with a specific subject: the brain, atoms, the big bang, etc.

This scientific orchestra releases all songs for free and relies on donations (via paypal and bitcoin).

The music videos can be watched on youtube (where they’re all the rage). All the MP3s (plus lyrics) can be downloaded on the SoF website.

Swiss style is known mostly for two qualities: keen attention to composition and detail, and it’s ability to communicate a lot with few elements.

The swiss style emerged in the 1950s and it’s also called “The International Typographic Style”. This style of design has it’s roots on two core ideas: Legibility and Objectivity.

Ever wanted to change the canvas size in Photoshop but couldn’t imagine it in numbers? There’s a more visual way of doing it. Surprisingly we can use the crop tool to do this: Select the crop tool from the toolbox (or use the shortcut: c), grab the handles of the crop rectangle and make it larger than your image. Now it’s just a questinn of deciding on a size and pressing Enter.

Note that this extends the canvas, it does not scale the image.

Cuenta la historia que en 1946 el pintor surrealista Salvador Dalí y el caricaturista surrealista Walt Disney planearon un corto juntos basado en una canción de Armando Dominguez (llamada Destino). Lamentablemente, después de ocho meses de trabajar en los storyboards Disney Studios decidió cancelarlo por razones financieras. Los storyboards y una muestra de 17 segundos que el artista John Hench había terminado fue lo único que quedó.

El proyecto quedo enterrado hasta 1999 cuando el sobrino de Walt, Roy Disney lo encontro mientras trabajaba en Fantasia 2000 (que si no lo vieron, se los recomiendo). “Destino” fue finalmente completado por Disney France, bajo la dirección de Dominique Monfréy y estrenado el 2 de Junio de 2003 en el Annecy International Animated Film Festival.

La calidad de la animación es excelente, aunque hubiera sido interesante verlo con un estilo mas tradicional (sin los fundidos entre cuadros y renders 3D). Personalmente me parece que las partes en 3D quedan medio desconectadas de la animación dibujada.
Espero que les guste, para los que nos gusta la animación (y Dalí) ¡es imperdible!

In 1946 surrealist painter Salvador Dalí and surrealist cartoonist Walt Disney planned a short film together based on a song by Armando Dominguez called “Destino”. “Destino” is the spanish word for Destiny. Sadly, after 8 months of storyboarding Disney Studios decided to kill the project for financial reasons. The (criptic) storyboards and a 17″ animation preview made by artist John Hech is all that was left.

The project remained buried until 1999 when Walt’s nephew, Roy Disney unearthed it while he was working on Fantasia 2000 (which I totally recommend). “Destino” was finally completed by Disney France under Dominique Monfréy’s direction. The short was released in 2003, in the Annecy International Animated Film Festival.

The animation quality is superb, although it would have been interesting to see a more traditional style (without the crossfades between frames and 3D renders). 3D renders often look a little out of place with hand drawn animation.
Hope you dig it. It’s a must see for those of us who love animation (and Dalí)!

Entre las esperadas desde hace años se puede contar la nueva interfaz, manejo de workspaces y mayor velocidad.

La nueva interfaz parece bastante inspirada en Photoshop: paneles que se agrupan estilo pestañas, un panel de navegación, selector de color estilo HUD, transformaciones en una sola herramienta…

Como siempre la nueva versión trae nuevos pinceles y varias mejoras a los que ya había. Ademas de las mejoras a los pinceles RealBristle™ secos (marcador, tiza, lapiz, etc.), se agregan los pinceles Real Watercolor (acuarelas) y Real Wet Oil (óleo) que dan unos resultados bastante realistas.

En fin, es una gran actualización, de las que se venían pidiendo hace años. La pregunta es si no será demasiado tarde. Mientras Painter IX, XI.5, X y 11 salían con sabor a poco; Photoshop iba adquiriendo rotación no destructiva (CS4), soporte para pinceles realistas y selección de colores con una rueda de color (CS5). Si bien, la rueda de color funciona como pop-up, también se puede utilizar en una panel (explicado aquí mismo).

Se puede ver la reacción de la gente en los foros de CGSociety donde antes el anuncio de una nueva versión de Painter hubiera tenido decenas de comentarios, ahora tiene solamente 2 mensajes (a la fecha). No pude probar el trial porque odio Akamai y su “manejador de descargas” incrustado en el navegador. Supongo que algún día me armare de paciencia y lo bajare .

Si sos de trabajar mucho con vectores, y en particular con Illustrator estas de suerte. AstuteGraphics acaba de presentar VectorScribe, un plugin para Illustrator (CS3 a CS5) que permite editar y crear vectores rapido y facil.

Lo que mas me intereso de este pack/plugin son Dynamic Shapes y Dynamic Corners. El primero para editar formas en vivo, tiene varias opciones que Illustrator no tiene (como hacer semicirculos y cambiar el angulo).

Dynamic Corners permite modificar bordes (ej. Hacerlos redondeados) sin tener que enloquecerse modificando nodos.

Personalmente no trabajo tanto con vectores como para justificar comprarmelo, pero a los que ilustran seguido seguramente les va a encantar.

The most interesting part of the toolbox were em>Dynamic Shapes & Dynamic Corners. The first let’s you edit shapes in real time with plenty of options that Illustrator just doesn’t have (like semicircles).

Personally, I don’t do enough vector work to justify the price (a tad to high), but I’m sure node-pushers will love it.

Bueno, los robots asistentes todavia están lejanos. Y tal vez nunca tengamos autos voladores, ¿Se imaginan los accidentes de transito?. Pero si tenemos comunicación instantánea, y seguimos (timidamente) explorando el espacio.
Si bien muchos aspectos de la ciencia-ficción se han alcanzado y otros superado, hay algo que sigue intacto: las aventuras, la exploración, el descubrir lo desconocido.

El mundo se hace cada dia mas pequeño y mas chato. Cada vez quedan menos paisajes remotos sin explorar, territorios que solo conoce la fantasia.

Pero por suerte siempre el futuro y el el espacio exterior siempre están ahi. Siempre podremos tener una odisea espacial en el año 3000, o una aventura en un planeta tan distante que se encuentra fuera de toda logica terricola.
Inclusive podemos tener la esperanza de poder desarrollar la psicohistoria antes que caiga el Imperio Galáctico dentro de mas de 12.000 años.

It’s the year 2011. The writer is completing his new article using the new brain-computer bridge, a simple conector that allows him to create almost anything by just thinking about it. Perhaps when he’s done he’ll jump on his flying “car” (do they still call them that?) and go for a drink on a nearby satelite.
His android assistant can take care of publishing the article on the hyperspace network anyways.

OK, so we didn’t get the android assistants. And we may never have flying cars (imagine the traffic accidents!). But we do have a global network with instant communication, and we’re still (slowly) exploring space.

Even though many aspects of science-fiction have been reached (some even better than we dreamed), there’s still something intact: adventures, exploration, discovering the unknown.

The world keeps geting smaller and flatter. There’s less and less remote, unexplored landscapes ripe for fantasy ever day.

We may never have flying cars (imagine the traffic accidents!).

Luckly, we will always have both the future and deep unexplored space. We could always have a space odyssey in the year 3000, or an adventure in a planet so distant it is out of any earthly logic.
We can even hope for developing psychohistory before the Galactic Empire falls, over 12,000 years from now.

Otomata por Batuhan Bozkurt es una nuevo tipo de secuenciador. Cada celda esta viva y se mueve en una de cuatro direcciones: arriba, abajo, izquierda, derecha. También colisionan contra las paredes y entre si, cambiando de dirección al hacerlo.

Suena simple? Lo es, pero la complejidad de las secuencias –y lo bien que suenan– los van a sorprender. Prueben Otomata en el sitio de Batuhan.

Otomata by Batuhan Bozkurt is a new take on the old grid sequencers. Each cell is alive and moves in one of four directions — up, down, right, left –, they also collide against walls and other cells and turn around.

Sounds simple? It is, but you’ll be amazed at how complex some sequences can get, and how cool they sound. Check out Otomata in Batuhan’s site.

Si bien el diseño web anterior funcionaba bien, distraía demasiado del contenido. Ahora el contenido es lo mas importante. Por su parte, el nuevo isologo funciona mucho mejor como marca y como signo que al anterior.

Estoy utilizando la tipografía Gnuolane (tipo buena, nombre horrible) para titulos, y de vez en cuando Permanent Marker para destacados.

Aun faltan varias cosas para mejorar del sitio, y algunas pocas de la identidad visual. Todavía no estoy completamente satisfecho (nunca lo estoy) .Presenting both the new website design and the new visual identity for Sinestesia! Now with a more “quiet” design.

While the previous design worked, it was way too distracting. Content comes first now. The new logo works a lot better as a brand than the previous one.

I’m using Gnuolane for titles (great typography, terrible name). And Permanent Marker for the occasional hightlights.

There are still lots of things to improve in the site, and a few on the visual identity. I’m not completely satisfied yet (actually, I’m never satisfied)
